Porterhouse by Barlows is located around a 30-minute drive from Nottingham city centre in Kirkby in Ashfield. They are traditional a family butchers and set up Porterhouse, their restaurant, in 2016. A successful start to them serving breakfast and lunch led them to opening in the evening and refitting their restaurant. They are proud of delivering the best quality with much of their meat coming from a local farm around ½ a mile away.
Upon arrival, we were quickly shown to our table and our drink and food orders were taken shortly after. The service was polite and friendly throughout and the food arrived fairly quickly, especially considering how busy they were. The restaurant is simply decorated with wooden flooring and tables. The restaurant is set over two floors and there is a selection of table sizes to cater for all group sizes.
We went for the trio of meats Sunday roast which was a mix of roast topside of beef, lamb and pork and a roast topside of beef Sunday roast. What arrived was a substantial plate incorporating many of the usual Sunday roast items. There were three large slices of tender meat which were all juicy and had hardly any fat on them. The gravy complimented the meats perfectly and was one of the stand out parts to the meal as this was rich and meaty due to the juices that come from the meat in the pan and lifted the flavours of the whole dish. The Yorkshire pudding was a good size and perfectly dark and golden in colour. The cauliflower cheese was creamy and smooth and with these was a mound of carrots and cabbage. The mash potato was smooth and creamy. The only area that could have been improved was the roast potatoes these were light and fluffy on the inside but not done enough on the outside with no real colour or crispness to them. Overall, this was a great roast dinner and I’d happily order a Sunday roast from here again.
They have a good selection of offers from breakfasts such as a traditional full English and josper fried steak and chips, a lunch menu with classics such as lasagne, fish and chips, with pies and burgers also on offer. In addition to these, they offer 5 different cuts of steak and this is something they are known for delivering good quality on, so I’m planning on visiting again to try these. However, on my visit I went for a Sunday lunch for which they have a selection of roasts on offer such as leg of lamb, slow braised shoulder of lamb, roast topside, slow braised blade of beef, roast lion of pork and trio of meats. All of their roasts come served with vegetables, roast potatoes, mash, Yorkshire puddings, stuffing and pigs in blankets.
